Portugal – The Moliceiros Regatta

Arte 360° Reportage 2025

The lagoon city of Aveiro is located on Portugal’s west coast, between Lisbon and Porto. The city is characterized by its many small canals, on which the famous ‘Moliceiros’ sail—colorful gondola-like boats made of pine wood that have a long tradition. The highlight of the year is the Moliceiros sailing regatta in August, the Festival of Emigrants.

The old wooden boats on Portugal’s west coast almost disappeared forever. Until the 1970s, the Moliceiros were used to transport seaweed, salt, and rice. At the time seaweed was used as a natural fertilizer in traditional agriculture. When artificial fertilizers came onto the market, seaweed and Moliceiros became superfluous. Many local people lost their jobs and emigrated to countries such as France, Germany, England, and America. But a small, dedicated group of boat builders stayed behind and fought for years to preserve the Moliceiros. The boats and special carpentry trade required to build them were to be preserved.

For many, a Moliceiro is more than just a traditional means of transport. It is an important symbol of the cultural identity of the Aveiro region, with a rich history deeply rooted in local tradition. In December 2025, the art of Moliceiro boat building from the region was officially recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in urgent need of preservation. An honor and an obligation, also for José Rito. He is one of the region’s most veteran and experienced Moliceiro builders and he makes everything by hand using old tools.

He wants to compete in this year’s regatta season with a brand-new boat. There is plenty to do. Fortunately, the seasoned veteran receives active support to set sail. But in the heat of the moment, even José goes overboard…
